Refreshed

Refreshed living room paint.  After:

Before:

FYI, my house was not built in the '20s, it's a few decades newer than that.  The new paint is Mineral from Behr (Home Depot).  Loved the two-in-one primer/paint, it covered really well in two coats.  It's a beige-gray, and although I knew it was going to be lighter than the green, I definitely expected it to look like colored walls.  Alas! the only reason I know for sure it is not white is because the mantel is white.  Other than that, I love the new airy quality it has brought.  I repainted the black parts of the fireplace (including the brass door frames), and am planning to paint the brick surround.  I was going to paint it white but now I wonder if it will be camoflaged, so I'm thinking perhaps white wash.  What do you think I should do?  Since I haven't decided yet it has not gotten done.  It definitely has to be painted, BFJ and I were a bit liberal when we re-mortared the bricks.  Oops.

You may or may not have noticed that I refreshed my blog header.  I also added a bunch of blogs to the sidebar.  I find artistic blogs so inspiring, whether they are cooking, photography, knitting, paper crafts, or other arts.  Check 'em out; I hope you discover a new blog to tickle your fancy!

Speaking of family news, my sister and her husband are expecting a little girl in early summer!  If you know of any fabulous baby-related knitting patterns, please let me know.  I am on the lookout.  If you know of any fabulous crochet patterns, you can send those too, as Nana is looking for projects also.  I am also on the hunt for the perfect cardigan or other sweater to knit myself; I have my eye on a couple from the latest issue of Knitscene.  Red, of course.

I was going to do the 365 project but I missed several days in January because I simply had the blahs and could not get myself out in the winter light.  I may start another month.  In the meantime, I am thinking of doing the photo scavenger hunt.  I wish I'd started that in January, I know an ideal tombstone or two!

PS Thanks for all your comments on Finding Contentment!

Love the new look. You're very brave. I'm stuck in limbo with all the updating that needs to be done around here -- I just don't seem able to make any decisions.

Have you seen Chic Knits for Stylish Babies? I blogged a teeny bit about it here http://thimbleanna.com/?p=988
There are some cute items in there. (Hope that link doesn't grash this comment LOL!)

  6. Love the refreshing photos and the blog color, of course! But the blue letters are very difficult to read against the red background.
Maybe a darker blue would be easier on the eyes?

Have you tried any vitamin D this winter? I did a post on this last March with a link here: http://www.womentowomen.com/healthynutrition/vitamind.aspx

My gynecologist ran another vit D level on me this year, and though I started taking it 3 days/week in November, my level is still a bit low, so she wanted me to increase it. Seriously, the difference in how I felt once I started it last year was amazing!

  7. When my daughter was pregnant I had lots of fun knitting from Susan B Anderson's books Itty- bitty Hats and Itty-bitty Nursery. Visit her blog!
I also made booties from a book by Kristen Nichols and another authur. They were called stay on booties and a great hit with the recipients. My cousin's granddaughter was pregnant at the same time with girl and I had fun fun knitting for both. There is a sweater in both books that I liked but didn't make as a friend made them sweater sets and blankets.

  8. I have lots of sewing patterns for little girls, but not knitting.:) I know you will make her something beautiful!
The paint color is beautiful. It does seem light, airy and calm. I love the idea of the photo scavenger hunt; I may try that one myself! I wanted to do the photo 365 challenge, but I failed miserably within the first week. Maybe I will start afresh!

reasons I knit

I haven't posted a lot of knitting on here in the last few years.  Not much to say about it but I still knit.   I knit because I love to create. I knit because I love sweaters. I knit because I grew up with a mom who is artistic beyond the acknowledgement she receives, and it's in my blood to do something creative. I knit because I love the good things God grows, like sheep and wool and muskox and cotton. I knit because I love colors. I knit because my boys wear what I knit. I knit because I like the rhythm. I knit because it has a beginning and an end, and they are achievable.  I knit because when my hands are busy, my mouth slows down, and it gives my brain a chance to make better decisions. I knit because I'm really, really good at it, and it's one of the few things that others acknowledge, and we all need that. I knit because I love to knit. I'm working on a colorful shawl in alpaca.

modular knitting

On the plus side, modular knitting gives one interesting options for colorwork and color blocking.  Sometimes the dye process can give the yarn its own commentary, like this changing of scales. However, there are often many more ends to weave in.  This one is not too bad, but there's at least four ends on every row - 14 rows.  Still, interesting to try something new! Details on my Ravelry page , if you are interested!!  Have you tried modular knitting?  Thumbs up or down??

getting through winter

As classes of all sorts get scheduled, rescheduled and postponed due to weather, and with the short days with less light, I often find January and February to be a forced pause.  Years like this convince me that I should get good at reading rain gauges and keeping track of the temperature.  It seems like we've had an usual amount of snow.  That should be good for our snow pack and seasonal runoff to fill creeks, lakes, basins, but we'll see what the spring brings.  In the meantime, I have been trying to tick off indoor chores and projects, and working on garden things.   We have started a handful of seedlings:  basil, foxgloves, verbascum, lavender, rosemary, onions and something new to us, naranjilla .  We have varying levels of success.  The naranjilla did take a long time to germinate; I think we used 11 seeds, and we currently have five seedlings, some a couple weeks older than others!  We're still 12-14 weeks out from planting and I really had my hands full last year -
