Red White and Blue

Here are more pictures of the quilt blocks I've been working on.  This quilt is called Star Power and was in the April 2009 American Patchwork and Quilting.  If you go to the link you can see the original on the table.  I liked the fabrics and colors in the original.  The brown sashing in the original is not my favorite.  I don't mind the colors but it changes the shape of the block.

In order to use the two reds I left out, I had to incorporate a few more fabrics, which means some are now duplicated.  And can you believe it, when I was done, I found another fat quarter.  Honestly!  Some gnomes must be rummaging around in my sewing room, rearranging the stacks!  So at this point, I have fifteen 11-inch blocks, and if I used some scraps and the other left out fabric, I could make two more.  I think it is kind of busy.  Are those bias stripes making your eyes go wonky like they do mine?  I am thinking of blue sashing.  I have about a yard of each of the red with big dots, and the red with flowers.  Should I make setting squares?  Any suggestions?  I think I will hand quilt this as I haven't tried machine quilting, and I really enjoy hand quilting.  I am not sure I could get a big quilt through my machine, either.  Although this is my first machine-pieced quilt, that's what the pattern called for.  It really did zip together quick!

I thought I was buying Red White and Bold by Sandy Gervais for Moda but as I was working with the fabric I discovered some pieces were not from the same line.  (I bought most of it in fat stacks.)  However, I think all of the fabric is Sandy Gervais.

  2. Your blocks look great, the star power quilt is very pretty. I love red, white and blue. I just ordered Sandy's nautical and nice line and think maybe I will make some wonky stars with it. Have fun!

  3. I think it's super cute and I like the stripes! I love the stars -- what a great block. And when you get your hands around the neck of those gnomes, could you please tell them to return the pattern that I've been searching for???

  4. Very funky looking quilt Karen- I think it looks great- I love the fabrics - and I love Star patterns.
Doesn't it make you crazy when you think you know where things are, and how much fabric you have, and then you can't find it! Do watch out for the fabric gnomes and please don't send them my way- I have enough mess in my sewing room already :O)
    Happy quilting,
    Regards,
    Anna

  7. Karen...great stars and I think the stripes add interest. I love using stripes and plaids in my quilts.

If I were going to handquilt this I would probably use setting squares. I do like the original pattern, not sure about the brown though.

garden panos from 2023

Last year, I made some effort (not thoroughly successful) to capture state-of-the-garden pictures every month, including panoramas stitched together on Photoshop, in order to get the whole view of what's happening.  So here's a little recap of the garden in 2023! early March April May June August It appears that I missed July, and either didn't take or didn't save this project in September, although we didn't have a killing frost very late into the season - we were still harvesting a few things in October.  As much as I loved the lettuce that was growing in the tunnel, and getting an early start on a few things, I'm not a fan of plastic anywhere, especially in my garden, so I am looking at options - cold boxes with old windows, etc.  I'm planning to start my 2024 garden this month - pea planting, planning, and seed starting in March!  What are you planting?

Spring Means Baseball!

I've had this idea for a knitting pattern in my head and it's finally come to fruition!  I am still polishing up the pattern, but here's a quick peak:  PS:  There's more than one size and this one is too big for me but it was the only one I had "stitched up."
