Successful Hunt

I was mostly successful with the photo scavenger hunt.  There are some subjects I had a hard time get a pleasing picture of but I had a deadline, so here are my final pictures:

a bridge

something with stripes

a musical instrument

a big lorry/truck
I had to look up 'lorry' to make sure I knew what we were talking about.  I have lots of pictures of trucks, none that I really liked, this one was... not the worst.

round clock face
We actually have a round clock in our house, but it's kinda boring.  As we were driving through the Hill area of Boulder I spotted this and insisted that BFJ pull over.  We actually had a nice little adventure, exploring a nearby skateboard shop, and getting some drinks.  I thought the boys were all going to go for hot cocoa but instead they had italian sodas.

'your shoes'
I am not really a shoe person.  I love shoes, but it's just too expensive a hobby for my lifestyle.  If I had the shoes of my dreams, I would get some Fluevogs, like the Mollie Johnsons, or some three-buckle boots.

park bench

a newspaper headline
A lot of other hunters have more timely headlines, but we don't get the big local paper.  We get the little local paper.

a 'post box'

eyes
I found these in a drawer of my great-grandmother's Singer.

something heart shaped

something red

  4. Great photos Karen! I love that your truck says England on it -- since the scavenger hunt comes from England and lorry is a British term. And those eyes! One must wonder what Grandma was doing with those eyes!

  5. Wonderful images! i can tell you had fun with this. I love stopping for a photo and ending up on a little family adventure - we often drive in and out of the country so much that we forget to stop along the way. the paper is right - "timing is everything"

  7. These are wonderful! I did not remember to hunt this time around, but I will try to do better this month. This is such a fun way to spend time with your boys!

garden panos from 2023

Last year, I made some effort (not thoroughly successful) to capture state-of-the-garden pictures every month, including panoramas stitched together on Photoshop, in order to get the whole view of what's happening.  So here's a little recap of the garden in 2023! early March April May June August It appears that I missed July, and either didn't take or didn't save this project in September, although we didn't have a killing frost very late into the season - we were still harvesting a few things in October.  As much as I loved the lettuce that was growing in the tunnel, and getting an early start on a few things, I'm not a fan of plastic anywhere, especially in my garden, so I am looking at options - cold boxes with old windows, etc.  I'm planning to start my 2024 garden this month - pea planting, planning, and seed starting in March!  What are you planting?

Night

Trixie (as in Speed Racer) and Stitch (as in per inch) Night My kitten walks on velvet feet And makes no sound at all; And in the doorway nightly sits To watch the darkness fall. I think he loves the lady, Night, And feels akin to her Whose footsteps are as still as his, Whose touch as soft as fur. Lois Weakley McKay ... a childhood favorite from The How and Why Library. Thank goodness my parents moved last year and sent this book my way. Otherwise, I would have just the first line running through my head forever!

Am I a lone reed?

"Kathleen, you are a lone reed. You are a lone reed, standing tall, waving boldly in the corrupt sands of commerce."  -Frank Navasky Do you ever have that thing where you say something out loud, and the moment the words leave your lips, you wish you hadn't said it out loud?  Almost like you jinxed it, even if you don't believe in jinxes?  I just had to go and say that my word for this year is 'contentment.'  What I have been struck with this week, several times, is the irony that I am seemingly alone, or perhaps one of very few people, looking to have deep, meaningful connections with real friends.  I invited every friend I have that a) lives in my relative corner of the world that I b) thought would be interested, to join us in some of our traditional fall festivities.  With the exception of my parents, and one VERY wonderful pair of friends, everyone has declined.  Everyone is too busy,  or in too much of ...
