Traditions New and Old

When I was little, my brother, sister, and I always got to sleep under the Christmas tree the first night it was up in our house.  We did not start this tradition right away with our kids, but last year it came up in conversation and my kids wanted to do it.  The kids slept under the tree last year; this year, we all slept in the living room last night, even though it was a school night! 

Last Friday we joined my brother's family at my parents' in the mountains to cut a Christmas tree down.  While we were there, we got some Christmas pillowcases from my mom, a newish tradition she started a few years ago.  I had told her that I was trying to stay with red, green, and brown for all my decorations so she found this cute fabric.  I love them!

    Oooh, those pillowcases look adorable! I love holiday traditions. We always spend Christmas Eve overnight at whoever is hosting -- Mom, my sister or me. We're all together from mid-afternoon on the 24th until at least the evening of the 25th and there have been many years when we just stay the extra day and don't leave until the 26th. It's so fun just to all be together. I often wonder though, how much longer we'll be able to continue -- as our kids are now mostly grown and as they marry and bring more into the family it will get pretty big. I LOVE your idea of sleeping under the tree the first night!

    Sleeping under the Christmas tree on the first night sounds like a fun tradition! I also love the idea of getting Christmas pillowcases every year. The ones your mom made are adorable.

    We don't really have any traditions that we do every year. We do try to watch A Christmas Carol every year and we do spend Christmas day with Nathan's family.

    I don't think we have any particularly unique traditions. We used to get new pajamas to open on Christmas Eve, but last year, we all decided we'd outgrown that one.

    We do have New Mexican fare for Christmas dinner, though. No ham or turkey for us!

    So do the branches not hit you in the face when you turn over? lol

    Christmas traditions are so special. I'm glad you still like sleeping under the tree! A Christmas tradition when I was growing up was the ribbon candy - I'd forgotten about that until I saw yours! Beautiful picture!

modular knitting

On the plus side, modular knitting gives one interesting options for colorwork and color blocking.  Sometimes the dye process can give the yarn its own commentary, like this changing of scales. However, there are often many more ends to weave in.  This one is not too bad, but there's at least four ends on every row - 14 rows.  Still, interesting to try something new! Spring Means Baseball!

I've had this idea for a knitting pattern in my head and it's finally come to fruition!  I am still polishing up the pattern, but here's a quick peak:  PS:  There's more than one size and this one is too big for me but it was the only one I had "stitched up."
