musings about the passing of time

A bush full of marigolds:

When you're young, "old" people will tell you how fast time goes by.  And when you're a new parent, people will go on and on about how this stage "won't last forever" and you should cherish it all, even the annoying parts.  It's just amazing, though, how many things will not fit into the time I have.

It strikes me how much more I get done in a span of time if I turn off all social media and email.

I have been accused, more than once, of being completely out of touch with what's "in," and of being old-fashioned.  Tone of voice aside, it's not the insult it was meant to be.  The more life experience I have, the more I begin to see the value of quality over quantity.  Frankly, there are so many more valuable uses of my time than racking up a high number of Friends, which, let's face it, are actually Acquaintances.

If you wonder, here are some of the recent experiences causing my musings: finding out why someone hasn't been speaking to me for two years; a classmate being diagnosed with breast cancer; being taken for granted; being cherished; a seemingly minor decision with lasting consequences.

But I'm still here, and life goes on; there's still Truth and time for forgiveness.  So here's to paper books, candles that have time to burn, homegrown tomatoes, handwritten letters, handmade gifts.  Yes, Anna, it's time for Christmas crafting :)

And yes, it all goes together.

  1. Ah. What a sweet post. Time is a hard thing to think about. So precious and rare - and, like you say, as you get older you start to realize that it's growing short. So much still to do. I can hardly believe we're on the waning side of Seltember. And yes, time to think about the C word. Last year (like many years) I decided to make all the ladies in the family little knitted hoods just a week before Christmas. Needless to say, I didn't get them all finished. Maybe I should finish them this year before I start new gifts?

garden panos from 2023

Last year, I made some effort (not thoroughly successful) to capture state-of-the-garden pictures every month, including panoramas stitched together on Photoshop, in order to get the whole view of what's happening.  So here's a little recap of the garden in 2023! early March April May June August It appears that I missed July, and either didn't take or didn't save this project in September, although we didn't have a killing frost very late into the season - we were still harvesting a few things in October.  As much as I loved the lettuce that was growing in the tunnel, and getting an early start on a few things, I'm not a fan of plastic anywhere, especially in my garden, so I am looking at options - cold boxes with old windows, etc.  I'm planning to start my 2024 garden this month - pea planting, planning, and seed starting in March!  What are you planting?

Thank goodness my parents moved last year and sent this book my way. Otherwise, I would have just the first line running through my head forever!

Spring Means Baseball!

I've had this idea for a knitting pattern in my head and it's finally come to fruition!  I am still polishing up the pattern, but here's a quick peak:  PS:  There's more than one size and this one is too big for me but it was the only one I had "stitched up."
